(Brasilia).- On Wednesday 24th at 10 am local time, the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) will meet to discuss a range of 20 topics, including the bill to expand the range of games of chance authorised in the country(PL 2.234/2022).

CCJ revisits agenda to expand authorized games of chance

After a postponement, the bill to expand the range of games of chance authorised in the country(PL 2.234/2022) is back on the CCJ's agenda. Written by former deputy Renato Vianna, the bill authorises, among other things, the operation of casinos and bingos, legalises gambling and allows betting on horse races. The rapporteur, Senator Irajá (PSD-TO), is in favour of the bill.

Among other points, the text establishes a limit of one casino in each state and the Federal District, with the exception of São Paulo, which could have up to three casinos, and Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Amazonas and Pará, states in which the limit is two casinos. The proposal also establishes rules for gambling centres on boats and for the operation of bingos and jogo do bicho.

In his report, Irajá dismissed as an "indeterminate legal concept" the offence against morals and good customs, used as an argument against games of chance, and stressed that the bill is about handing over to state control a practice that today constitutes a misdemeanour.

After the vote in the CCJ, the bill will go to the Plenary for a vote.
